How to Blur a Screen in a Video or Screen Recording
June 20, 2026
Recording a demo or tutorial and need to blur a screen? Monitors, phone screens, and dashboards often reveal passwords, private messages, customer data, or internal tools. Here's how to cover them before you publish — without uploading your recording.
What to hide in a screen recording
- Passwords, API keys, and tokens.
- Chat windows, emails, and notifications.
- Customer names, account numbers, and dashboards.
How to blur a screen, step by step
- Open Blur The Video and import your screen recording (processed locally).
- Draw a box over the area of the screen you want to hide.
- Use pixelate or a solid block — text needs a strong effect to stay unreadable.
- Set the timing so the cover appears only while that content is on screen.
- If a window moves or new sensitive info appears, add more boxes at those moments.
- Export and review at full size to confirm nothing is legible.
Why not just crop?
Cropping changes your whole frame and often can't isolate one region. A timed blur box keeps the rest of the demo intact while hiding exactly what you need. Not sure which effect? See blur vs pixelate for redaction.
